POSITION DESCRIPTION
TITLE: Library Assistant - Sugar Creek Branch
REPORTS TO: Branch Manager
HOURS – Part Time 16 Hours per Week
Daytime and evening availability is needed for this position. This position also requires some weekend shifts.
General Summary:
Performs circulation and clerical functions to serve the Library’s patrons in a friendly manner and to maintain circulation of the Library’s various materials.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Greets and assists patrons in meeting their needs during their visit to the Library, including utilizing the computer system to circulate outgoing materials and check in incoming materials. (E)
- Performs other patron services to include doing computer searches to locate materials, putting items on reserve and notifying when available, and registering patrons for new or renewed library cards. (E)
- Performs various activities to maintain the organizational aspects of the summer reading club including registering patrons, keeping records of reading activity and issuing prizes.
- Assists with children patrons as needed; may help with summer craft programs and pre-school story times.
- Maintains a positive and friendly attitude when dealing with the public. (E)
- Performs functions to keep library materials organized, including arranging books for proper shelving and searching shelves for overdue books.
- Performs various clerical tasks including answering the phone, collecting fees for overdue materials and reporting daily statistics; attends monthly staff and department meetings; may take meeting minutes.
- Performs other functions assigned to position to insure effective and smooth continuity of operations and transactions in the best interest of the Library.
- May be responsible for closing of library in the absence of Branch Manager.
Minimum Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Previous library experience preferred but not required
- Ability to deal pleasantly, patiently, sensitively and tactfully with the public
- Computer aptitude
- Ability to operate basic office equipment
- Ability to deal with regular interruptions and multiple tasks
- Detail-oriented
Working Conditions:
- Normal library working conditions
- Light to medium lifting, bending, reaching, stooping or kneeling regularly
- Occasional stress due to dealing with irate patrons
- Regular use of computer and associated eye strain and fatigue
Supervision Received:
Occasional supervision; most duties are related, and work is performed following standard instructions and procedures. Unusual problems are referred to supervisor, frequently with suggestions for correction.
