HCPL Volunteer Program

The Hancock County Public Library volunteer program is designed to assist personnel, promote library services, and create educational opportunities.

Overdue Check Clerks

Main Library, Sugar Creek Branch, and Techmobile (collection at Sugar Creek Branch)
Work during regular library hours on Monday.

Description:
Each Monday check shelves for books returned but missed by the normal check-in system; takes about two hours.


Shelf Reader

Main Library, Sugar Creek Branch, Techmobile (collection at Sugar Creek Branch)
Work during regular library hours.

Description:
Make sure the books are in proper order (choose an area that is of special interest to you)


Special Projects

Main Library
Work during regular library hours.

Description:
Folding brochures, program books, copying materials, stamping withdrawn books, etc.


Circulation Assistant

Main Library
Work during regular library hours.

Description:

  • Empty book drop
  • Shelve Audio/Visual materials
  • Arrange returns on book carts
  • Clean CDs & DVDs
  • File DVDs

Tech Services Assistant

Main Library
Work anytime between the hours of 9:00 AM - 5:00 PM Monday - Friday.

Description:

Work in Technical Service Department repairing worn books and other library materials so that they may circulate again. Training and supplies are provided. Typical tasks include: repairing broken spines, reattaching loose pages, mending book jackets, recovering materials, re-labeling materials, and replacing containers.


Reference Department Volunteer

Main Library
Work during regular library hours. Reports to Reference Librarian.

Description:

This volunteer description provides a variety of support services to the Reference Department including maintenance of the Vertical File and Catalog collections, updating various Reference resources, and other duties as assigned.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. The Reference Department carries many Reference and Business Reference resources that need periodic updating.  The volunteer would assist Reference staff with this responsibility.
  2. The volunteer may be asked to perform other duties as assigned by the Reference Department. 

Qualifications and Time requirements:

  1. Volunteer would be asked to donate 2-5 hours/week to work on these projects. 
  2. Must be comfortable with computers and Microsoft computer software.
  3. Have good organizational skills and ability to work with various office and library equipment (such as laminator etc.).

Periodical Volunteer

Main Library
Work during regular library hours.

Description:

  • Assist with shelving of newspapers and magazines.
  • Place newspapers in bags for recycling at the end of the month
  • May be done any day of the week.
  • Minimum one hour each week
  • Requires lifting, carrying, and stooping
  • Training available

Local History Volunteer

Main Library
Work during regular library hours.

Description:
These volunteers are usually interested in genealogy or local history. Duties vary from indexing, filing, shelving, answering correspondences, or assisting patrons with online and hard copy research.


Covered Wagon Volunteer

Description:
Retired teachers are perfect for this job. Help bring the Covered Wagon kits to fourth grade classes in Hancock County. The program, developed by the Indiana State Museum, ask groups of children to decide what household goods pioneers should carry to the frontier and what they must leave behind. The children choose from among historically accurate, miniature furniture and utensils and load them inside a prairie schooner. Most presentations take place between January and April, with training provided.
