Early literacy is what a child knows about reading and writing before learning to read and write. It is not the teaching of reading. It involves the skills children need to be successful in reading when they start going to school. The 5 early literacy skills develop in the first 5 years of a child’s life and set the stage for future success.
Parent involvement is essential in developing these skills. Parents and caregivers, you are your child’s first teacher! Remember, HCPL is here and ready to assist you in this endeavor with helpful resources and knowledgeable staff. We also offer free storytimes that incorporate early literacy ideas. Check out our calendar for dates and times!
