Program Description
Celebrate the fascinating world of insects with Dr. Elizabeth Long, whose passion for the natural world is both inspiring and contagious. Despite growing up with a fear of insects, Dr. Long has undergone complete metamorphosis into an entomologist, also known as an insect scientist! Her applied research and extension program at Purdue is focused on helping specialty crop farmers solve real-world challenges involving both good and bad insects. Through her years of training and work with insects, she has developed a deep love for these organisms and is excited to share her knowledge with us.
Her presentation will feature preserved insect specimens from Indiana and around the globe, with a special focus on native pollinators, beneficial insects in the garden, and how they help our environment. Dr. Long will bring along examples of solitary bee houses and nesting materials, encourage audience participation, and show how these “invaluable invertebrates” support our ecosystems. This engaging program is designed for all ages.
As part of the Green Thumb series presented by the Hancock County Master Gardeners Association, the evening will also include educational booths on planting for pollinators and creating healthy habitats for insects and wildlife. You can even learn how to become a Master Gardener yourself!
Free and open to the public. Refreshments will be served and attendees will have the chance to win door prizes.
